The Exhibition “The Art of the Brick” in Bordeaux
After captivating millions of visitors in cities like London, Paris, Milan, and Berlin, “The Art of the Brick” arrives at the Musée Mer Marine in Bordeaux.
The exhibition, inaugurated on April 18, 2025, features over 70 sculptures made with more than a million LEGO® bricks, offering a three-dimensional reinterpretation of masterpieces such as Klimt’s “The Kiss,” Michelangelo’s “David,” and Van Gogh’s “The Starry Night.”
These works, recreated with LEGO® bricks, provide a new perspective on traditional masterpieces, making them accessible and captivating for an audience of all ages.
Nathan Sawaya: The Artist Behind the Works of The Art of the Brick
Nathan Sawaya, former American lawyer, has turned his passion for LEGO® into a successful artistic career. Considered the number one “Brick Artist” in the world, Sawaya uses millions of bricks to create sculptures ranging from reinterpretations of classic artworks to original creations.
His traveling exhibition has attracted over 10 million visitors globally, consolidating his reputation in the contemporary art scene.
Other Notable LEGO Artists
In addition to Sawaya, other artists have explored the creative potential of LEGO®:
- Marco Sodano: Sicilian designer known for recreating masterpieces of art history in pixelated version using LEGO bricks. His technique consists of breaking down images into pixels and reconstructing them with LEGO, bringing to life works like “Lady with an Ermine” by Leonardo da Vinci and “Self-Portrait” by Van Gogh.
Some of his works – even if not the LEGO ones – are available at the Bit Gallery, an online art gallery specializing in contemporary art. For example, the work “Lady B” is described as a unique piece made with acrylic colors on glass and a vintage photograph, measuring 53×63 cm with frame.
- Mariann Asanuma: The first freelance LEGO artist in the world, she worked as a Master Model Builder at LEGOLAND California. She created iconic attractions and wrote books on building techniques with LEGO, contributing to spreading the culture of the bricks in art.
The Market Value of LEGO Art
The art created with LEGO has gained increasing attention in the contemporary art market. The works of artists like Sawaya have been exhibited in prestigious museums and have reached significant prices in auctions, for example with a piece sold for 20,000 dollars.
This trend reflects a growing interest in forms of art that combine playful elements with profound artistic expressions, challenging traditional conventions and expanding the boundaries of contemporary art.
The exhibition “The Art of the Brick” in Bordeaux is not just a display of LEGO® sculptures, but a celebration of creativity and innovation in art. Artists like Nathan Sawaya demonstrate that even the simplest materials can be transformed into extraordinary works of art, inspiring both adults and children to see the world with new eyes and to explore the endless possibilities of creativity.
