Christie’s: in Paris an auction that celebrates the avant-gardes of the 20th century

Christie’s in Paris is preparing to host an extraordinary auction from April 8 to 11, 2025, celebrating the artistic avant-garde with five main sales that trace the evolution of the artistic movements of the 20th century.

At the Christie’s auction in Paris the Lise et Roland Funck-Brentano collection

The week opens with the sale of the collection of Lise and Roland Funck-Brentano, prominent legal figures known for their visionary eye and deep commitment to the artists of the 20th century.

This collection reflects their passion for abstract and kinetic art, presenting works by Hans Hartung, Alexander Calder, Auguste Herbin, and Victor Vasarely, including six unpublished pieces. Two standout lots define this sale: a striking wood relief by Sophie Taeuber-Arp and a 1954 oil on canvas by Pierre Soulages.

Henri Canonne Collection: an impressionist lesson

Following the sale of Henri Canonne’s collection, a fundamental chapter in the history of Impressionism. A bold collector, Canonne assembled an extraordinary set of masterpieces by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, including “La Leçon d’écriture,” the central piece of this sale.

This occasion will bring to light rare works that have remained out of the public eye for over 80 years, embodying the prestigious “gusto Canonne,” faithfully maintained by its heirs. A magnificent landscape by Camille Pissarro, an intimate nude by Pierre Bonnard, and a rare series of watercolors by Johan Barthold Jongkind complete this exceptional collection.

20th/21st Century Art – Evening Sale

Another highlight of the week is the “20th/21st Century Art – Evening Sale”, which brings together masterpieces of modern and contemporary art.

An iconic work by Toulouse-Lautrec and “Les Amoureux” by Chagall will be featured, while “Paysage au nuage” by Nicolas de Staël and “Prestation de serment” by Jean Dubuffet will be presented alongside works by Piero Manzoni and Alighiero Boetti in the “Thinking Italian” section.

At the auction Impressionist Art and more

Two additional sales will conclude this series of significant auctions. The “Art Impressionniste & Moderne” session will commemorate the centenary of Félix Vallotton’s passing and will feature works on paper by Pablo Picasso, as well as a rare suprematist drawing by Kazimir Malevich.

In the meantime, the “Art Contemporain” sale will showcase works by Anselm Kiefer, Fernando Botero, and Germaine Richier, paying tribute to Jean Paul Riopelle, a key figure in lyrical abstraction.
