The discussed auction organized by Christie’s Augmented Intelligence was held online from February 28 to today, March 5. It has just concluded. Let’s see what the results were.

The results of Augmented Intelligence
Refik Anadol (B. 1985) with Machine Hallucinations – ISS Dreams – A (NFT & physical object) exceeds the estimate ceiling of 200,000. It reaches, in fact, the peak of 277,200 dollars. The work transforms 1.2 million images captured by the International Space Station into a moving video composition.
Harold Cohen (1928-2016) was a pioneer of the genre, in the late Sixties he had invented AARON, an artificial intelligence program that reinterpreted his sketches. At auction, Untitled (i23-3758) remained, on the contrary, within its lowest estimate but found a buyer for 11,340 dollars.
The work xhairymutantx by the duo Holly Herndon and Mat Dryhurst reached 94,500 dollars (estimate 70,000 – 90,000).
The artists trained a text-to-image AI model on images of Holly, a musical and digital art icon. The final appearance of the image is given by the costumes that distort the artist’s body. Additionally, her most notable feature, the red hair, is exaggerated. The braids indeed wrap around the body. Her identity is transformed into an AI heroine.
The generative work of Alexander Reben
The generative work of Alexander Reben was fueled, in real-time for the entire duration of the auction, by the bids received. Starting from a small square of one square inch (100 dollars therefore equals one square inch), it continued to expand following the rhythm of the bids. It then settled with the end of the auction at 8,190 dollars. The estimate had been calculated from 100 dollars up to 1.78 million dollars to reach a maximum size of 12 meters by 10. The tiles merged into a patchwork of images.
Overall, out of 34 lots, 25 were awarded. Some exceeded the highest estimate, others confirmed the lowest.
