PIASA and the auction with the design collection from Cindy Sherman’s Parisian apartment

Cindy Sherman was the protagonist of the centennial cover of the New Yorker. It is the second time that the magazine’s cover features an artist’s photograph. In 1925, for the first publication, the editor-in-chief Harold Ross turned to Rea Irvin, the art director. He conceived the image of a young man with a top hat observing a butterfly through a monocle. The dandy was named Eustace Tilley, and Cindy Sherman portrays him in her photograph. Sherman is the chameleonic performer who has self-portrayed in the guise of female characters in the Untitled Film Stills (1977–1980). The aim was to critique gender and identity in mass society and the recurring female stereotypes in cinema, television, and the advertising industry.

PIASA, founded in Paris in 1996, auctions the contents (furnishings and design works) of the American artist Cindy Sherman’s Parisian pied-à-terre, designed by the Laplace studio. Luis Laplace is a Franco-Argentinian architect. Among the most important projects are the Hauser & Wirth gallery in Paris, an award-winning art center in an 18th-century farm in Somerset, and another in Minorca, located in a former military hospital.

Modernist furniture, contemporary art works, rare design pieces, fashion accessories, luxury items like personalized luggage will be auctioned at the auction on Thursday, October 2 in Paris.
