Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown sets a new auction record

On the sixtieth anniversary of the animated special, “Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown” sets a new record at auction for arts related to classic animation.

What makes the new auction record for Charlie Brown historic?

It is a record-breaking result for Charlie Brown, marked by a special sequence of Cel animation, the two-dimensional technique typical of classic cartoons that creates movement frame by frame.

In Dallas, at Heritage Auctions, three iconic products for the classic television special A Charlie Brown Christmas reached $102,000, the highest amount ever recorded for an animated sequence of the Peanuts.

The subject of the sequence is highly symbolic: the protagonist carrying his small Christmas tree in the final scenes of the film. Additionally, the coincidence with the 60th anniversary of the special adds further celebratory value to the sale, combining television memory and high-end collecting.

Why the Heritage auction strengthens the animation market

The three cels came from the The Art of Disney Signature® catalog of Heritage Auctions. The American auction house, a reference point for film, sports, and comic memorabilia, achieved this result at a particularly significant time for the Animation & Anime Art department.

At the beginning of 2025, Heritage celebrated the extraordinary Art of Disney sale, which totaled $5.19 million.

Subsequently, in October 2025, a dedicated auction for Japanese animation and non-Disney productions followed, with a total realization of $3.2 million. Overall, the department exceeded $17 million in sales in 2025, marking the second consecutive record year for this specialized category.

How collectors react to animation works

“This year has demonstrated, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the breadth and depth of demand for animation works from every era and area of collection,” said Jim Lentz, Vice President of Heritage Auctions for Animation & Anime Art.

Furthermore, he emphasized how, from the world of Charlie Brown to that of Walt Disney, collectors respond to the history and creative genius encapsulated in these materials.

Compared to more traditional segments of the art market, animation collecting stands out for its strong emotional connection to childhood and 20th-century popular culture. However, the rising values and auction records also indicate a growing recognition of their historical and artistic significance.

What other standout lots marked the auction

The record of Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown was not the only noteworthy result. Among the top lots of the same auction was a rare and unique Key Master set from Cinderella, consisting of a production cel and a Key Master background signed by Walt Disney, sold for $21,600.

Additionally, a Courvoisier set with Sorcerer’s Apprentice Mickey and the brooms from Fantasia realized $9,600. Together, these lots confirm the interest in the most iconic moments in animation history, where the founder of Disney studios’ signature and certified provenance significantly impact the final value.

What role does rarity play in works signed by Walt Disney?

“It was an extraordinary collection of works signed by Walt Disney,” added Lentz, commenting on the results. He also noted how collectors are fully aware of the rarity with which these pieces emerge on the market: when it happens, the opportunity to purchase them represents, in his view, the closest experience to having “the history of animation in one’s hands.”

That said, the dynamic observed in the Dallas auction reflects a broader trend: the growing attention towards original production materials, from cels to preparatory illustrations. In the case of Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown, the combination of iconic subject, anniversary, and condition played a decisive role in the new record.

Overall, the record set by Heritage Auctions for Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown consolidates the role of original animation as a mature market segment, capable of attracting both historical collectors and new enthusiasts interested in combining memory, pop culture, and investment.
