La Mer, a pop-up fair that opens in Marseille but involves 3 continents

Marseille and the sea, the root of the name already contains the echo of the ocean and the generative principle of creativity. The year of the oceans is, not by chance, the year in which La Mer opens in Marseille, a city that boasts 3 kilometers of seafront. And the sea returns with its liquid reality to also permeate the Marseille museum network. It is engraved like a symbol, evoked by artists repeatedly as a source. It is a reservoir of ideas to draw from. The sea is an integral part of the life of the people of Marseille, so much so that just diving from the rocks of Fausse Monnaie, Calanque di Malmousque is enough to refresh the mind and escape the summer torpor.

The eyes wet with sea light of Ali Cherri and the hands that capture the sea recalling the shape of the eye in the video by Laure Provoust. The works of both artists are exhibited at the MAC, Musée de l’art Contemporain.

The exhibition Tattoo. Histories of the Mediterranean at the Centre de la Vieille Charité tells us, instead, about marine civilizations and tribes through the spread of tattoo culture, from its remote invention to its widespread and mainstream contemporary diffusion. Isn’t the sea the place where we freely show our skin and the designs that envelop it?

The Casterline|Goodman Gallery in Aspen presents some works by Daniel Yocum that draw from both the Abstract Expressionism of Jackson Pollock and the raw style of Michel Basquiat. The works also display a naïve taste and childlike graphics that reveal inner tones and references to the musical world from which the artist originates. The painting technique is mixed: Oil stick, wax, acrylic, graphite. Prices range from 16,500 to 25,000 dollars.

Interesting the stand of Trickie Lopa – director of Art Fair Philippines – with the textile works (4,760 euros) of Melvin Guirhem. They are placed next to the bags (1,178 euros) in taffeta and magnetic closure by Neil Felipp.

The New York gallery IRL offers works by Jon Burgeman such as Baguette (2,800 USD), a cross between pop and street genres. But also the views of Aurea Tanttu (oil and pencil on wood panel, at 1,600 USD).

Mettre à nu le président instead is an ironic presentation of Bureau Principal that starts from the famous shot by Man Ray capturing Marcel Duchamp while playing chess with a nude model.
